Description:  There is a crisis in our land. There is a groundswell of volunteers wanting to help.  The need to address the crisis is not limited to the border. There is a lot for legal volunteers to do in Minnesota-and you don't need to be an immigration lawyer to help. Are you a lawyer without immigration experience wondering where you fit in? This is the CLE for you. 

Topics Covered:

• Putting the crisis into context: the unaccompanied minor waves beginning in 2014 and the current border surge of parents and children. What is the Minnesota connection to these surges?
• What's happening with immigration enforcement and detention in Minnesota.
• What organizations are working on these issues in Minnesota and what are their volunteer needs
• How non-immigration lawyers and other legal professionals can help

Note: This CLE will not address current travel ban issues.

Our Mental Health: Vicarious Trauma, Compassion Fatigue and The Importance of Self-Care in the Legal Profession

Being a lawyer can be stressful. Whether you work in pro bono immigration, help clients who lost their home or job, or represent people facing prison, our profession can be emotionally draining. Coming home and listening to the news can be disheartening as well, with stories about Harvey Weinstein, violent white supremacy marches, and attacks on the Department of Justice filling the 24-hour news cycle. All of these factors can cause trauma.

Please join The Minneapolis-St. Paul Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society, the Minnesota Chapter of the Federal Bar Association's Diversity Committee, and the Hmong American Bar Association for a program that will discuss types of trauma, the impact of others’ trauma, our risks, and what to be aware of. Participants will learn self-care techniques that will lessen the impact of our exposure and help us to develop resilience.

Echoes of War: The Combat Veteran in Criminal Court 

Presentation By: Brockton Hunter

Brockton Hunter is a criminal defense attorney and former Army Scout who has represented Veterans in many high-profile cases. Brock drafted and led passage of Minnesota’s Veterans Sentencing Legislation and has helped pass similar legislation in other states. He has been recognized nationally for his work on behalf of veterans in the criminal courts. This CLE will cover the history of PTSD, its ties to criminal behavior, and how we in the justice system can do a better job with our veterans this time around.
